ABC Resources
Mark Scott, the managing director of the ABC yesterday unveiled a plan to rationalize ABC production resources. The plan apparently has been developed after “examining in some detail the way we make content for ABC TV, and looking for ways to ensure we’re operating as efficiently and effectively as possible while still maintaining the quality and volume of Australian content that our audiences love”.
The upshot of Mark’s message is that the production of news is to be automated and Production Resources is to be corporatised although how the latter actually saves the ABC any money is not clear, and the ambit claim that the new technology will not impact the quality of the ABC’s product is yet to be proven. What is clear is that bundling this so-called innovation with the idea of new TV services will create the impression that the ABC is doing the right thing as far as providing a service to the public coincidently at a time when negotiations for the new enterprise bargaining arrangement are due to start.
Saving money in the ABC is a laudable idea. Not wasting it on lofty ivory towers in the middle of Sydney’s CBD would be a great place to start. Outsourcing the core business of the organisation while still maintaining high staff levels is just a management tool to create just this scenario. Corporatisation of Production Resources (ie the creation of a self serving unit within the ABC to provide the resources needed to actual make TV content) will make it easier at a later date to simply off-load ABC Resources onto the private sector. So the privatisation of the ABC continues, whilst the charade that it is a public entity is maintained.
